Abstract—Press conference interpreting is a relatively
formal setting of interpreting in which consecutive interpreting
(CI) is often employed. The author chooses to study the
subjectivity of the interpreter in the press conference given by
the Information Office of the State Council in Mainland China.
The topic is not only of theoretical importance but also sheds
some lights on real-life interpreting scenario. By studying the
subjectivity of the interpreter in consecutive interpreting from
the parameters of Attitude, Engagement and Graduation under
the Appraisal Theory, the author believes it will help explore
the extent to which the interpreter manifests his/her
subjectivity in press conference setting, and enable the
interpreter to have a better understanding about his/her stance
and the strategies he/she might adopt, thus improving the
overall quality of consecutive interpreting.
